In May of 2007, SDFF assembled a group of community agencies to discuss working together to address the growing need for technology and technical services in San Diego County's low-income communities. The group determined that it could create a solution and provide those families with computers, software, training, and related resources.
In October of 2007, SDFF requested a $250,000 investment from the California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF). The grant award and formal implementation of the San Diego Broadband Initiative (SDBI) began in July of 2008.
SDFF's role is to provide hardware and services, manage, develop, and administer the initiative, and develop the partnerships. SDFF anticipates the growth of the Initiative and SDBI programs to be significant, and expects it to become an important part of the County's social equity programs in the coming years.
